I Disown You Right Back

This blog plays sidekick to the video "I Disown You Right Back" with Mrs. Trixie Cane, a satirical queer attack ad that asks viewers to think about what would happen if queers, trans* people and feminists automatically disowned relatives who supported organizations that jeopordize our lives and fabulousness. Scroll to the bottom to see all of the Maximum Emotional Pain Payback Postcards plus both the original video and
the Dirty Plotz Extended Version.

"Queer Coping" Call for Videos

“I Disown You Right Back” with Mrs. Trixie Cane is the first video in a new video series that I am curating called, “Queer Coping.”

Through “Queer Coping” I am soliciting short (under 5 min) videos from queers, feminists & trans* people with relatives who follow religions that perpetuate homophobia, transphobia and powerfulwomenphobia. (You can replace “phobia” with “hate” if that’s more accurate to your situation.) In this project I’m asking folks to make videos that answer the question, “How do you (queer) cope with your religious relatives?”

There are so many resources to help the families of queers and trans* people “cope” with us, but so few for those of us trying to cope with these relatives. I suspect that people’s (queer) coping strategies will change throughout their lives. Maybe this is something that you will want to take up in your video; or maybe you’ll want to make several videos documenting your (queer) “coping” strategies at different phases of your life. Or maybe your coping strategies aren’t what you understand as “queer” and that’s okay too. I want to know about it!

If you aren’t sure about making a video but you want to participate in the project, contact me & I can arrange for an interview with Mrs. Trixie Cane!

To submit to this project:

Queer Coping Call For Videos

Rolling deadline: Dec 30, Jan 30, Feb 28 — or be in touch!

1. Make a short video of less than 5 minutes (you can submit several). It doesn’t have to be fancy. Please don’t use people’s real names if they don’t want you to or anything that would be slanderous.

Please also don’t use sound, image, video, etc. files that you don’t have fair use access to or copyright for. This includes family photos with other people in them, if you don’t have their permission.

Feel free to contact me before you make the video, if you want to throw some ideas around.

I welcome videos that text & non-text based and videos in languages other than English. If you are sending me a video that is not in English, please either include English subtitles, even basic ones, or send me the script so that I can be sure that the video isn’t slanderous, etc.

2. Convert/save as a Quicktime (.mov) file or as an MP4.

3. Send me the video via YouSendIt or We Transfer or some other system that will allow me to download your video.

4. Send me an email with your name in the subject line, with a thumbnail photo file, the title of your video and full credits (including the name you want to use in relation to this video, what your role was and all the names of the other folks who worked on it, provided images, video, audio, etc.). If the video is untitled, please use “untitled” as the title.

All emails should be sent to QueerCoping@gmail.com. Videos will be posted here on this tumblr and the Queer Coping video calendar here: http://www.52pickupvideos.com/HTML/Cowan_y2_grid.html

5. I will write back to you within a few days and let you know when your video will be screened on the amazing video calendar, 52 pick-up, run by Dayna McLeod. The project will run from March 15, 2013-March 15, 2014 and all videos will be uploaded to this site.

The video can be as simple or as complicated as you like. If there is enough interest in “Queer Coping,” I’d like to put it together as a feature-length video montage.

Thanks for your interest! Send your videos!

"I Disown You Right Back" with Mrs. Trixie Cane - Artist/Activist Statement

"I Disown You Right Back" with Mrs. Trixie Cane is meant to respond, in a dramatic & hyper-satirical way, to the normalized betrayals that queers, feminists & trans* people experience from their families.

This video takes the effects & affects of these betrayals seriously & then turns the tables.

This video also asks viewers to think about the ways that queers, feminists & trans* people are instrumentalized by folks who continue to support religious organizations that promote hatred of & discrimination against queers, trans* people & women, while simultaneously tolerating or accepting their queer, trans* & feminist relatives. The logic seems to be that as long as folks let one or two queers into their houses & to their weddings, around their children, etc. that they are really good people & this tolerance or acceptance of their own relatives absolves them of the consequences of supporting these religious organizations that encourage “believers” to treat homos, women & trans* people badly. So, it’s meant to notify these well-meaning folks that as long as they are supporting these anti-gay, anti-trans & anti-feminist religious (and secular) organizations, they are also hurting the quality of life of those queer, trans* & feminist relatives. The rhetoric of “we love you but you’re not like those others (who deserve to go to hell)” is gross.  So stop it!

“I Disown You Right Back” is like a queer attack ad, or a comedy video manifestation of “Bash Back!” but without the private sector funding or the physical violence. It is also an opportunity to think about the complex affective spaces that we navigate under the headings “family” and “religion,” “faith” and “politics,” “love” and “harm.” What does it mean to think about families and religion as states of exception?

Finally, my policy is that folks who are loving & cool to their queer, trans* & feminist folks are awesome, but do not get extra points; it’s just common decency, after all.  But folks who passively support organizations that are nasty to us and/or our people? Well, come on! You can be better than that! Make demands of your church leaders that they stop being super crappy to homos, trans* people and women! Instead of putting money into that collection envelope, put in a list of doctrinal demands!

It is likely that people will be curious about my own family & how they treat me. It’s a long story. Some day I might tell it. For now, let this video do the talking.

Here is the original (shorter) version of the video.

In this mock infomercial, professional spokeslady Mrs. Trixie Cane promotes the “I Disown Your Right Back” campaign in response to religiously-motivated familial homophobia, trans*phobia and misogyny. Publicly released on Feb. 28, 2013, the date of Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation, the video is a satirical speculation on a world in which queers, trans people and women “withdraw their affective bonds and labor from family members who continue to support hate-mongering religious organizations.”

Through satire, the “I Disown You Right Back” campaign asks audiences to consider the real emotional and material consequences of religious violence within families.

This video is based on a live performance by writer/performer T.L. Cowan. “I Disown You Right Back” was first performed live at the Open Toe Peepshow in New York City in (November 4, 2012), and later developed for the Encuentro of the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics in the America’s in São Paulo, Brazil (Jan 16, 2013).

“I Disown You Right Back” is the inaugural video in the “Queer Coping” collaborative short video series, which asks queers, trans people and women to make and submit short videos about how they “cope” with religious relatives who continue to support homophobic, trans* phobic and misogynist religious organizations. Check out my upcoming posts about the “Coping” project.

The I Disown You Right Back Dirty Plötz Extended Version initially screened on Feb. 13, 2013 at the Dirty Plötz cabaret theatre project, curated by Alex Tigchelaar, at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre in Toronto as part of the Rhubarb Festival.
